ABSTRACT

Many studies have been carried out in Menchum Division based on the historical causes of conflicts and approaches by local authorities aimed at resolving these conflicts. This study looks at an alternative approach to the settlement of disputes between farmers and grazers in Wum central Subdivision, seeks to assess the performance of the Farmer-Grazier Dialogue Platform Promotion Committee (FGPPC)set up by the Netherlands Development Agency (SNV) in 2007. The respondents were drawn from seven out of 16 villages that make up Wum Central Subdivision. Random purposive sampling was employed to get the sample for the study. Personal interviews, questionnaires and unobstructive observation were the principal tools used in collecting primary data. It came out that the approach of mediation by the FGPPC has been reducing conflicts, stopping the violence that existed before 2007 and giving rise to a cordial relationship between the two parties. Farmers and grazers learn of the FGPPC from neighbours and sensitization campaigns. Peaceful negotiation has been the main successful mechanism followed by capacity building. Farmers and grazers are educated on their interdependence. To sustain this peaceful approach to settling disputes, the FGPPC needs to be structured as an RPO with the impetus to settle disputes and the capacity building of the members is also necessary.
